Sam George, a member of parliament from Ningo Prampram, has challenged Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to travel using the Ghana card to show that it is in fact a valid travel document.

In his opinion, the Vice President is misleading the public about how to use the Ghana Card.

The Vice President claimed that the Ghana Card can be used for international travel after listing numerous achievements of the government’s digitization effort.

“People ridiculed the Ghana Card because they could not comprehend how the ICAO-certified card could be used as a travel document. However, it is a reality today, hence Ghana cards should be obtained by our diasporans before they depart Ghana. They can travel to Ghana after they receive the card.

A member of the Parliament’s Communication Committee emphasized on Tuesday that the Ghana card is not yet a complete travel document.

“Our Vice President is there, but he doesn’t get the problems. If the Ghana Card allows you to board and disembark, you must use it as a travel visa. Considering that a journey can only be considered complete when you can embark from one country and enter another. As of right now, there isn’t a desk for Ghana cards at the Kotoka International Airport’s departures area. There is only one desk for arrival cards for Ghanaians, and they are the only ones who can use it. And even for people returning home, if you’re coming from, say, London, you won’t be able to board any airline at London Heathrow by only displaying your Ghana Card.

You must provide your passport and demonstrate that it is either a Ghanaian passport that entitles you to return to Ghana without a visa or, if it is from another nation, that it is accompanied by a Ghanaian visa.

“Dr. Bawumia himself, as Vice President, cannot travel from Ghana with his Ghana card,” Mr. Sam George emphasized. I’m daring Dr. Bawumia to leave Ghana on his Ghana card alone and travel abroad. An official of the status of vice president should not be misleading the public to this extent.

He said it is concerning that the Foreign Minister must continually correct the Vice President on the matter.

Dr. Bawumia repeated on Monday that the Ghana Card may be used as a travel document, but on Tuesday, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, the minister of foreign affairs, clarified that the Ghana Card is only currently intended for domestic usage.
