The musician Gasmilla has joined the opposition to the Ghana Gaming Commission’s decision to forbid celebrities from sponsoring gambling businesses.

The “Telemo” hitmaker denounced the decision as an intentional attempt by the government to keep superstars financially crippled.

“When I first heard it, I just understood why Ghanaian artists are in this situation. It appears that the government wants to impoverish artists. It’s almost like they’re doing it on purpose to spread poverty, exert control over the media, or stifle artistic expression.

He claimed that he failed to secure a partnership with a betting company that had intended to work with him on community development initiatives.

“I tried to collaborate with someone, and he appreciated the community work I was doing. He claimed to be the owner of betting business, and I would want to put you in touch with the General Manager to see if you two can take action because they also desire community activations.

I argued why not. I support them if they are going to assist the neighborhood and help it grow. Now the guy calls and claims that the government has advised us not to sponsor musicians. Manipulating his diet gives you power over him.

The Ghana Gaming Commission forbade betting enterprises in 2020 from employing famous people in their advertising or as brand ambassadors.

According to the Commission, the decision was made because more celebrities were endorsing bookmakers, which would tempt young followers to gamble.
