GFA Faild to Ensure Criteria For Black Stars Squad Selection

Sports journalist, Chief Seidu Adamu says the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have failed to ensure a criteria for Black Stars squad selection is made known.

On Thursday, head coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor quietly released a 29-man squad for the final hurdle of the AFCON qualifiers. Some names in the team sparked outrage from stakeholders.

In an interview on the Joy Sports Link on Saturday, Adamu highlighted the lack of continuity and legacy shown in the most recent selection.

Merit brings me to this discussion. Why has the FA failed to get the coach to put up his criteria for selection? If you look at this selection, any technical person can easily say that this country is not focused. Of the 29 players, we have 44% having their debut call-ups,” he told Nathaniel Attoh.

“This team have played four qualifiers and have two remaining. When you are going into a crucial point, you are having 44% of the squad being debutants. We also have 31% of the players being local. Of that local percentage, only 10% have been in the team before.”

“If you look at remaining players that have been in the team before, only two have had more than 20 caps for the national team. This should tell you that this team is depleted and lack legacy. Only Andre Ayew, Thomas Partey, Jordan Ayew and Kudus are known to be playing at the top level,” he concluded.

Ghana will face South Africa on March 25 and host Sao Tome and Principe in the final game on March 28.
