In local elections deemed illegal by the federal government, polls in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia have been officially closed.

Officials said that the turnout rate exceeded 97%.

The national and regional polls were originally scheduled to be held in August, but due to the corona virus pandemic, the Addis Ababa government postponed the vote.

TPLF, the main political party in the region, once ruled the Ethiopian government. However, after Prime Minister Ahmed Abiy came to power two years ago, the dispute with his government is now deepening and is eliminated.

The reporter said that the decision to conduct the general election was partly to emphasize the TPLF’s position that Mr. Abbey had no legitimacy after postponing the election.
