Management of the University of Ghana has said that persons found culpable in the acts of violence on the University’s campus last night will be sanctioned appropriately.

According to the Management, efforts are underway to identify the perpetrators.

This is in response to an inter-hall fight that ensued between the residents of the Commonwealth and John Mensah Sarbah halls of the University of Ghana last night resulting in injuries and damage to properties.

The University denounced the “needless acts of violence that have resulted in injuries and property devastation” in a statement released on August 6, 2022.

The statement read, “Management of the University has noted with alarm, yet another series of clashes between students of Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah Halls, which happened late on Friday, August 5, and early on Saturday, August 6, 2022.”

The “students of the two Halls must immediately cease any planned continuation of these acts,” it further urged.

Additionally, management reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and stability on all of the university’s campuses and to ensuring that academic work and other activities can proceed without interruption.

According to a witness who requested anonymity, Sarbah Hall residents celebrated “Sarbahfest” on Friday.

The residents of the hall participated in a procession, known as a “Jama,” as part of the festivities.

One of them ended up at the Commonwealth Hall, where he was assaulted and had his phone taken away.

The beaten Viking reportedly went back to his dorm to report the assault. Then, as his colleagues followed him to the Commonwealth Hall, a brawl broke out.

During this operation, a car that was parked in the Mensah Sarbah Hall parking lot caught fire.
