Mustapha Ussif, Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports, has asked the International Games Committee and Chef de Mission to provide an explanation for the men’s 4100m quartet’s disqualification.

With a run of 39.05 seconds in the semifinals, Ghana qualified for the final but was strangely disqualified due to a “technical mistake,” according to Ghana Athletics.

The Minister finds this answer to be unpersuasive and has requested that the Games Committee provide his office with a report on what led to the error.

Ussif extended his apology on his Facebook page, saying, “On the earlier faux pas [of] 4100 final race disqualification, I’ve asked the International Games Committee and the Chef de Mission to send an exclusive report to my office about that occurrence.”

“Congratulations to Wahid Omar and Joseph Paul Amoah for representing Ghana and winning bronze medals in the 200 m and men’s light welterweight events, respectively.

I also wish Joseph Commey and Abraham Mensah well in their final fights at bantamweight and featherweight, respectively.

Paul Amoah finished third with a time of 20.49 seconds to win Ghana’s first medal in the 200m since 1974 and Africa’s first since 2006.
